FLAME TRIMMER
The Flame Trimmer is a low energy (520 mA) fan complete with air damper which increases fuel economy and improves flame control. It is easily fitted to any Portaforge model (in place of the air intake pipe) and is very quiet in operation.
It is supplied with a mains adaptor for use in workshops and with a connecting cable so that it can be attached to 12-Volt systems in vehicles. It is supplied in two sizes: one for the larger blacksmiths' workshop forges (the Mother and Mini-Mother) and a smaller size for all other models.
Without the Flame Trimmer. Each model in the Swan Portaforge range is normally fitted with a gas jet of a size that gives standard maximum heat output at a gas pressure of 4 bar (60 psi). This optimal set-up gives the best results for most purposes and in most conditions.
With the Flame Trimmer. When the Flame Trimmer is incorporated, however, a slightly larger gas jet is also fitted. This allows standard maximum heat output to be reached at just 2 bar (30 psi), a pressure more easily maintained in cold climates and with prolonged use. Because of the presence of the Flame Trimmer, the gas tap can then safely be opened above 2 bar. Heat output is greatly increased, while the flame is controlled by trimming. (See the graphs on the individual Portaforge pages.) This reduces the heating-up time, as well as offering the operator three types of flame: 'oxidising' (which contains no unburnt products of combustion), 'neutral' (the perfect mixture of gas and air), and 'reducing' (a relatively cool flame suitable for making minor adjustments).
